Registration Fee Waiver for Early Career Researchers

Proposals have been submitted to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to provide support for early career researchers (graduate students and postdocs). The awards provide a full registration waiver. Award recipients are required to present a poster at FOMMS, attend the full conference (Sunday to Thursday), and make accommodations at the conference hotel. DOE awards are restricted to early career researchers working on DOE-supported research projects.

Nominations of early career researchers for the registration fee waiver are made by research advisors or group leaders.  The nomination package consists of (i) a short nomination, (ii) the abstract for the early career researcher’s presentation at FOMMS 2022, and (iii) the early career researcher’s CV.  Please use this web form to submit an application. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2022.

Applicants are requested not to register for the conference until they have received notification of the outcome of their application. Successful applicants will be provided a special link for a registration waiver. Applicants will be required to stay at the conference venue. The Conference Manager will contact the applicant for details and make the lodging reservations for the applicant.

Outing Options and Fees (for Tuesday, July 19)

You may only participate in one outing as they are all on July 19.

Zip Line Canopy Adventure
Experience an absolutely thrilling Zip Line Adventure in Lake Geneva with the 2 to 2 1/2-hour guided Zip Line Canopy Tour. Soar through the trees on 8 different zip lines, 5 sky bridges, 3 spiral stairways and a one-of-a-kind “floating” double helix stairway which wraps around a breathtaking ash tree. The 1,200-foot Racing Zip Line is the grand finale, weather permitting. This “living tour” built in the trees of a 100-acre forest is an ecological sightseeing adventure with a bird’s eye view of Lake Como, the surrounding countryside and a variety of wildlife. The Ground School will provide you with the basics of zip lining (such as hand signals, positioning, breaking and self-rescue). Your first zip is a short one to get you warmed up. By the time you reach The Beast, the longest zip line in the Canopy Tour at 841 feet, you will be ready for anything! Your tour guide will wow you with fascinating facts on the ecology, biology, geology and local history of the Geneva Lakes area. They also have several miles of beautiful hiking trails, a gift shop and snack bar (serving alcohol). Participant Requirements: Ages 7 and up. Weight 70-250 lbs. This tour does NOT include lunch and the bus will be scheduled for pickup at Lake Lawn Lodge after lunch. Details to follow in June. Cost is $95 per person.

Called “The birthplace of modern astrophysics”, the Observatory was established in 1897 and is operated by the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Chicago. It is on a beautiful 77-acre site just off Lake Geneva in Williams Bay. This is a private, expanded tour. Guides describe the Observatory’s history, the interior and exterior architectural detail of the building and a look inside the 90-foot dome at the 40-inch refractor telescope. The Observatory has been restored since 2018 and the guide can offer more access to behind-the-scenes areas. The expanded tour will offer demonstrations on the working of the refractor telescope as well as the operation of the 90’ dome and 75’ elevator floor. Guests can visit their gift shop after the tour. This tour does NOT include lunch and the bus will be scheduled for pickup at Lake Lawn Lodge after lunch. Details to follow in June. The tour will last a little over one hour.
